Brandon City Council’s first meeting of September is set to take place on Tuesday, during which councillors will hear about a proposal to name a local street after former Brandon Wheat King Don Dietrich.

According to the agenda notes for Tuesday’s meeting, VBJ Developments Ltd. have submitted the street name Dietrich Bay for a subdivision they are building in the city’s southwest end, located between 26th and 34th Street south of Maryland Avenue.

The streets of this subdivision already bear the names of several former Wheat Kings, including Bill Derlago (Derlago Drive), Glen Hanlon (Hanlon Crescent), Ron Chipperfield (Chipperfield Drive) and Bill Fairbairn (Fairbairn Place).

Over the last couple years, VBJ Developments has been working with the city to immortalize former Wheat Kings through this subdivision, with an official grand opening ceremony having taken place in September 2016.

The agenda notes for Tuesday’s council meeting make the case that Dietrich is definitely a worthy addition to this project, having helped lead his team to a WHL championship during the 1978-79 season.

Dietrich was eventually called up to play for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1983-84, and would continue to play hockey professionally until retiring from the game in 1991.

During the Wheat Kings’ 50th anniversary season in 2016, Dietrich was named one of the team’s top 50 players of all time.

Dietrich was also inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame twice — once in 2007 for his role in the Wheat Kings’ 1978-79 championship season and again in 2011 for giving back to the Westman hockey community through tireless volunteering.

Unfortunately, in February of this year, Dietrich died at the age of 59 following a multi-decade battle with Parkinson’s disease and cancer.

According to the agenda notes for Tuesday’s meeting, city administration is recommending council members approve VBJ Developments’ proposal and add “Dietrich Bay” to their official street names registry.

Tuesday’s council meeting will also deal with some other local infrastructure projects, including the third and final reading of a bylaw that would close a portion of 13th Street North, located north of Stickney Avenue, to make way for the development of some affordable housing.
