Souris Scarecrow Days are back celebrating the harvest season this October.
It’s exciting planning the 30th annual Scarecrow Days, said chair Pam Whitfield. This year’s festivities will run from Oct. 1 to 3.
Given the challenges local businesses have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said the Souris-Glenwood Chamber of Commerce hopes the celebrations will boost support for them and help the local economy.
“The idea is to get people, far and wide, excited about coming to Souris to participate in everything we have to offer. All the fun events and all the great products and services our chamber members have to offer,” Whitfield said.
To honour the first edition of Scarecrow Days that took place in 1992, this year’s theme has been deemed “Party Like it’s 1992.” Whitfield said they are encouraging people to create displays that capture their memories and favourite things that made 1992 special.
While the scarecrow displays are judged, she said, the ultimate goal is to see as many community members as possible participate in the project and have fun.
“It’s mainly about having fun. Really just whatever people have in their basement, attic, garage, closet to throw something together that’s wacky or beautiful, you make it your own and have fun with it,” Whitfield said. “People are so creative. The more the better, so people have something to enjoy.”
Whitfield said the chamber’s goal is to see as many displays as possible. They are encouraging every business, organization and household to participate and create their own special display.
She noted displays don’t have to adhere to this year’s theme, but many participants use the theme as a way to get the creative juices flowing.
The 2021 edition of Scarecrow Days will be especially fun as the community is able to once again host events and gatherings, she added.
A town-wide yard sale has been planned as part of the celebrations, running Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The chamber is encouraging people to register their garage sale at LT’s Corner Store in Souris to be included on a community-wide map.
A number of events will take place over the weekend, including fundraisers that will benefit different local organizations.
Souris Farmers’ Market will likely mark its last event of the season on the Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the town parking lot. New vendors are welcome and can register for a spot for $5.
A noon-hour barbecue hosted by the Souris-Glenwood Fire Department is also planned that Saturday. Volunteer firefighters will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire hall raising funds for new equipment. The fire department will also have equipment on hand for guests to see that has been purchased through other fundraising initiatives.
Souris Elk Lodge #21 is hosting an apple launcher as a fundraiser on Oct. 2 in the Bowl in Victoria Park below Crescent Avenue.
Whitfield said the highlight of the evening of Oct. 2 will be the Scarecrow Social made possible by a joint effort between the chamber and Westoba Credit Union.
Whitfield said she is especially pleased because local talent Morgan Peloquin from Bethel Road and Cale Biech will open the evening at 8:15 p.m., followed by the Celtic rock band the Dust Rhinos at 10 p.m.
“[The Dust Rhinos] first performed in 1992 as well, they can party like its 1992. It is irresistible, toe-tapping music,” Whitfield said. “Their lead singer, Blair McEvoy, is also from Souris. We’re so happy to welcome him back and he’s stoked to be coming back to play.”
Tickets for the social are $15 each.
Whitfield encourages people to participate, plan out their day in Souris, take in the events and enjoy the festivities while following the COVID-19 rules.
