Brandon’s Christian Heritage School is dealing with a coronavirus outbreak linked to the delta variant, according to Thursday’s COVID-19 update from the province.

As a result of this outbreak, provincial representatives said that at least one class at the school has been moved to remote learning until Oct. 1, although they wouldn’t specify which class is involved.

Christian Heritage School principal Bryan Schroeder didn’t reply to the Sun’s request for further information by Thursday evening, simply stating via email that “Christian Heritage School is continuing to follow public health protocols and is working closely with public health to ensure the safety of students, staff and the school community.”

A brief glance at the province’s COVID-19 tracker map on Thursday evening showed that two COVID-19 cases were associated with Christian Heritage School in the two weeks prior to Sept. 22.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that a Brandon-based K-12 school has grappled with COVID-19 cases since the new academic year began on Sept. 7.

Throughout this time, individuals from Vincent Massey High School (Grade 12 class), Riverheights School (Grade 1 class), Betty Gibson School (Grade 1/2 class) École New Era School (Grade 5/6 class) and École O’Kelly School (three separate grades) have contracted the virus.

However, Thursday marks the first time that a local school outside of the Brandon School Division has registered a new exposure since the fall semester began. Christian Heritage School is managed by Christian Schools International.

Plus, none of the previously mentioned COVID-19 cases at BSD schools have forced any classes to transition from in-person instruction to remote learning.

The province has registered 70 total COVID-19 cases in Manitoba K-12 schools since the beginning of fall semester, according to their online dashboard as of Thursday evening.

Of these 70 cases, 60 cases are students and the remaining 10 are school staff.

This total marks a sharp jump from the 19 K-12 COVID-19 cases that the province registered on Sept. 23.

While COVID-19 outbreaks were originally relegated to the Winnipeg, Brandon and Steinbach areas at the beginning of the fall semester, cases have since popped up in Portage la Prairie, Winkler, Flin Flon and Thompson.
