A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at the Benito Personal Care Home, affecting nearly all residents living at the small facility, according to Prairie Mountain Health.

Eighteen of the 20 residents have tested positive for the virus, PMH chief executive officer Brian Schoonbaert said in a statement Wednesday.

There are 20 beds and four transitional beds at the facility.

General visitation at the facility has been suspended until further notice.

Because of the fast-moving outbreak, staffing has been doubled in many departments to ensure care needs are being met. Staff are coming from Prairie Mountain Health facilities and departments, including EMS, with agency staff also joining the battle.

“PMH acknowledges the staff at Benito PCH for their dedication, compassion and commitment to care for all levels at this site,” Schoonbaert stated in the release.

An outbreak was declared on Oct. 10, with the province reporting 10 cases among nine residents and one staff member.

The province is listing the situation at the facility as critical on its COVID-19 webpage.

The release stated since the outbreak was declared, doctors have been coming to the facility daily to assess all residents. As well, Prairie Mountain Health Incident Command has been meeting daily and the region continues to plan for care of all the residents.

Diet, social work, and clinical education/infection prevention and control staff are at the site at least twice a week as well.
