A longtime and much-loved Brandon University professor is being remembered for his kindness and impact on the community.
Associate professor Michael Malazdrewicz died on Dec. 10 at the age of 65, according to his obituary. He graduated from Brandon University in 1977 with a bachelor of science in mathematics and computer science before starting as an instructor at the university in 1996.
He taught in the department of math and computer science before he was hired full-time in 2002 as endowed chair, business administration.
Malazdrewicz was “deeply committed” to his students and the university, assistant professor Lindsay McLachlan stated in a press release. Before working with him as a colleague, Malazdrewicz taught McLachlan in a small-business management course at the university.
“He cared about his students’ personal growth and aspirations and always had time to discuss innovative ideas. His passion for Brandon and small business will be remembered,” she said.
Malazdrewicz also helped spur the university’s creation of the BU Innovation Zone, a 3D-printing and prototyping workshop he ran on campus.
He also paired fourth-year students with local organizations to develop solutions to real-work problems for approximately 20 years, according to the press release.
“Although he will be greatly missed, Mike set an example for everyone here at Brandon University,” said university president David Docherty.
“His students loved him, and I know that they will continue to cherish the lessons he taught them.”
A livestreamed memorial service in memory of Malazdrewicz is planned for Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Donations in Malazdrewicz’s memory can be made to the St. Augustine’s Parish Organ Restoration or to the Brandon University Scholarship for Small Business & Entrepreneurship.
