An Ontario couple had a rude awakening Wednesday morning after an overnight stop in the Wheat City.

Shar Heino said she and her husband woke up to find the back window of their car smashed and several bags stolen. They were parked at the Holiday Inn Express, near the Keystone Centre, during a stop while driving from Ontario to British Columbia.

“You just feel so let down,” she said.

While they would normally stay in a hotel near the highway, she said they opted for the more central location.

The parking lot was well lit and had security cameras, she said, but it didn’t stop the thief.

One of the two bags contained two avalanche beacons and a PowerDot physiotherapy machine, and the other had pillows in it. The red bag is Stormtech brand, while the black one is ORTOVOX.

The stolen items were worth approximately $2,000, Heino said, adding she feels “violated.”

“It was just really disappointing because you know, you think ‘Yeah sure, you’re in downtown of a city but you got a good hotel,’ it’s not like you’re in a seedy part of town … then that happens. It’s just really s—-y,” she said.

The couple searched dumpsters near the hotel Wednesday morning, thinking the thief might have dumped the bags, but had no luck.

While the back window of their car was completely broken, a local auto body shop was able to shrink wrap the window to make it safe to continue the drive, she said. She also filed both an insurance claim and a police report.

The Sun contacted the hotel general manager Suzanne Rowley for comment but did not hear back by press time.

Heino is asking anyone with information or who finds the bags to contact the Brandon Police Service.
