A group of truckers have plans to drive through several Westman communities in support of the ongoing protest in Ottawa on Saturday.
According to a post in the Brandon Area Freedom Support Facebook group, participants are planning to gather at the Tim Hortons in Brandon at 9 a.m. and will head out of town at 9:30 a.m.
The itinerary has the truckers going through Carberry (10:15 a.m.), Sidney (10:50 a.m.), Austin (11:10 a.m.), MacGregor (11:25 a.m.), Portage la Prairie (break for a half-hour at noon then proceed at 12:30 p.m.), Gladstone (1:45 p.m.), Neepawa (2:15 p.m.), Minnedosa (3:20 p.m.) and finally ending in Brandon (4 p.m.)
One of the organizers, Brian Kilpatrick, told the Sun via Facebook Messenger the route through Brandon will see the participating vehicles head south from Highway 1 on First Street to Richmond Avenue, head west to 18th Street and then drive up the North Hill.
A spokesperson from the City of Brandon said Friday the city has no specific plans to respond to or manage the protest. However, the Brandon Police Service is aware of the situation and is liaising with the organizer.
“We are not anticipating any issues other than some minor traffic delays,” they wrote in an email.
