Brandon’s jail now has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases in the province as the virus continues to have a presence in Manitoba jails.

The Brandon Correctional Centre had 138 active cases of the virus as of Wednesday, according to the province’s list of COVID-19 outbreaks. The jail has a rated capacity of 244 adult men, including short-term holding for youth offenders and women.

There have been a total of 258 cases recorded at the jail over the course of the pandemic, including 72 staff members and 186 inmates. A total of 120 cases are listed as recovered.

All other provincial jails also list active COVID-19 cases, including 33 at the Headingley Correctional Centre, 32 at the Women’s Correctional Centre, 28 at the Winnipeg Remand Centre, 27 at The Pas Correctional Centre, 16 at the Agassiz Youth Centre, 13 at the Milner Ridge Correctional Centre and five at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

Provincial jails have brought in safety and cleaning measures in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus in the correctional institutions, according to the province.

“All correctional facilities have a number of safety protocols in place to address the spread including regular cleaning and a supply of PPE to staff and inmates,” a provincial spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The Sun also asked if any inmates had been hospitalized as a result of COVID-19, but did not receive a response.

No deaths from the virus have been recorded at any provincial jail.
