Two Westman athletes and former Prairie Storm track stars captured Canada West track and field gold medals on Saturday.
Neepawa’s Daxx Turner and the Manitoba Bisons won the men’s team title at the conference championship at their home James Daly Fieldhouse. Meanwhile, Brandonite Daniele Dyck and the Saskatchewan Huskies claimed the women’s crown.
Turner was named the top rookie in Canada West after taking home individual gold in the triple jump with a 14.95-metre mark in the final, well beyond second-place Lauchlan Irish of Lethbridge (14.69m).
“It’s pretty exciting,” Turner told John Gaudes of Bisons Athletics. “The win is definitely up there. Everything for me has been just high school and nationals, so it’s exciting to have some performances at a different level. First Canada West, to win it as a rookie, that definitely checks off a box.”
Turner also finished fourth in the men’s high jump. He was second in qualifying at 2.01 metres and jumped 1.97m in the final, losing the bronze to teammate Isaac Peters on a tiebreaker. Alberta’s Wesley Calef won at 2.00m.
Dyck missed out on the women’s 60-metre dash final by .01 seconds, running a 7.87 in preliminaries to finish ninth. Dyck’s Saskatchewan Huskies teammate Gracie Anderson won gold with a final race of 7.48.
