Coun. Shaun Cameron (University) has tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home.

The Brandon city councillor first revealed the news on his Twitter account Monday evening as he participated in that night’s council meeting.

“Well, 739 days was a long run,” Cameron wrote. “Those I was around continue to test negative, I’m incredibly grateful and hopeful that remains the case. I was masked, vaccinated, careful; and still acquired COVID-19.”

Brandon city Coun. Shaun Cameron (left), has raised concerns about privately-run youth homes in the city. Rather than waiting for the province to act, the city should explore solutions itself.

Speaking to the Sun by phone on Tuesday, Cameron said his family remains unaffected by the virus as he isolates from them.

He has experienced most of the symptoms commonly associated with the virus, though he isn’t sure if he’s lost his sense of smell from COVID or from the congestion he’s experiencing.

“I’ve felt tough the last couple of days here,” he said with a raspy voice. “Obviously there are people who have dealt with far worse with regards to this so I just want to limit my contacts and hopefully keep everyone around me healthy and get back to normal.”

For Cameron, who has publicly supported Manitoba’s immunization campaign against the virus, this experience has shown him the importance of getting the COVID vaccine.

“I think vaccination has made a world of difference in my case,” he said. “Hopefully, anyone else who’s had to deal with COVID, I think this could be a really scary situation health-wise if you weren’t vaccinated, so I think it’s been a game-changer and I’m fortunate to be vaccinated. I would tell anyone I know, anyone I talk to that they should consider [getting vaccinated] because it’s made this a bearable situation.”

Though he’s staying at home while symptomatic, Cameron said he has continued to correspond with his constituents and can be reached by phone or email.
