RCMP respond to shots fired in Hamiota

Around 4:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Yellowhead RCMP received a report that there had been a shooting on Sixth Street in Hamiota.

According to a release sent out by RCMP, suspects allegedly fired shots into a residence while driving a dirty grey or black SUV thought to be a Pontiac Torrent. Police believe there were four people in the SUV.

The homeowner was not present when the shooting occurred, but two men staying at the residence were home. Neither was physically injured.

After the shooting, the vehicle is said to have fled southbound on Sixth Street, west on Maple Avenue and then proceeded north on Highway 21.

Police searched for but could not find the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call Yellowhead RCMP at 204-759-2344 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at manitobacrimestoppers.com.

Putty knife used in break-in attempt

Police responded to an apartment building on the 900 block of Braecrest Drive around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers received a report that someone was trying to break into the building’s common area using a putty knife.

After arriving, police located and arrested a 33-year-old man. He was charged with attempting to break and enter and possessing break-in instruments.

On Twitter, Brandon Police Service wrote that a putty knife is not illegal to own, but it is illegal to have anything in your possession for the purpose of breaking and entering.

Two incidents lead to detention

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Brandon Police Service responded to an apartment building after receiving a report of an unwanted man being in one of the units.

Upon arrival, police discovered the man in question had already been reported as wearing out his welcome at another residence that same evening.

To avoid any other incidents, the 29-year-old was lodged at BPS holding cells for the night.

Assault while intoxicated

A 21-year-old man was arrested for assault around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police responded to an apartment after receiving a report of violence and discovered during an investigation the man allegedly assaulted a victim.

Because of his intoxication level, he was lodged at Brandon Police Service cells. Once sober, he was scheduled to be released to appear in court on May 9 on one charge of assault.
