Brandon Fire and Emergency Services is working to support the family of Jason Potter, the reeve of the Municipality of Harrison Park and deputy chief of the fire service, who was severely harmed in a two-vehicle collision Monday.
“Jason is in Winnipeg, and he’s receiving the needed medical care that is required at this time,” BFES Chief Scott McDonald said Tuesday.
The family is also receiving support from the Brandon firefighter charity fund, McDonald said.
Potter sustained serious injuries after the collision south of Erickson on Highway 10 early Monday morning.
Dean Sutherland, 53, from Onanole, was killed in the crash.
Police said a vehicle travelling north and a vehicle travelling south collided.
STARS air ambulance transported Potter to hospital. At the time, he had “life-threatening injuries,” according to the municipality.
Deputy reeve Craig Atkinson has temporarily assumed Potter’s responsibilities as reeve.
Yellowhead RCMP were still investigating the collision as of Tuesday.
The collision comes two weeks after Jonathan Hofer, 18, was struck and killed by a vehicle along Grand Valley Road west of Brandon.
In 2021, the RCMP reported 71 fatal collisions in areas under their jurisdiction. As of May 17, there had been 26 people killed on roadways under RCMP jurisdiction so far in 2022, but that number has since increased.
