Lucas Ewert took the junior varsity boys 1,500-metre timed final down to a near photo finish at track and field provincials in Winnipeg on Thursday.
The Vincent Massey Vikings freshman posted a time of four minutes 23.37 seconds to edge Carman’s Nathan Dyck (4:23.53) for the gold medal.
Ewert also anchored the Vikings JV boys medley relay team to gold as the only team to crack the four-minute mark at 3:59.86.
In the varsity boys 1,500m, Neelin’s Andrew Simard won with a time of 4:13.74 out of Heat 2 while runner-up Benji Dueck of Morden posted 4:15.96 in Heat 3.
Simard also posted the fasted 400m preliminary time of 49.88 seconds.
The rest of the day was filled with prelims and a few semifinals. The championships continue today and wrap up on Saturday.
