Warriors Walk planned for Father’s Day
A walk planned for Sunday is looking not only to honour fathers and grandfathers but missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys as well.
According to Jason Gobeil of Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services, Brandon will join Winnipeg, Roseau River, Swan Lake, Long Plain, Dakota Plains, Dakota Tipi, Portage la Prairie, Sioux Valley, Birdtail Sioux and Canupawakpa in holding a Warriors Walk on June 19.
The event comes from the Ohitika/Ogichidaa initiatives looking to create a narrative about Indigenous men and boys in Canada who have been murdered and provide support for Indigenous men.
Indigenous men in Canada are at the highest risk of being victims of homicide, according to a Monday news release.
There will also be barbecues planned alongside the walks.
For more information, contact Gobeil by phone at 204-834-2323 or 431-541-1830 or email jason.gobeil@docfs.org.
Cullen, Nesbitt promote mining sector
Two Westman MLAs are in Toronto this week to pitch Manitoba as a mining destination at a major conference.
According to a provincial press release, Spruce Woods MLA and Economic Development Minister Cliff Cullen and Riding Mountain MLA and Natural Resources Minister Greg Nesbitt are attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada conference.
“We are taking a whole-of-government approach to show our commitment to the mining sector and positioning Manitoba on the world stage as a preferred mining destination,” Nesbitt said in the release.
“Mining is a significant, longtime contributor to Manitoba’s economic prosperity, and we recognize there is tremendous potential for additional investment and job creation in the sector.”
Manitoba is seeing its highest-ever level of mining exploration expenditures in its history this year.
The conference started Monday and concludes Wednesday.
