The glamour of the Arabian horse is returning to Brandon this August, showcasing all the talents of the ancient breed.

The Arabian Horse Association recently released a tentative schedule on its website for the 2022 Canadian Nationals Arabian and half-Arabian Championship Horse Show.

The 11th instalment of the show and championship will kick off on Aug. 14 and run through Aug. 20, bringing together competitors from across the United States and Canada.

This is a competition for points and prizes, but there are plenty of casual activities for the public to enjoy for free and get to know more about the breed.

Competitors from all over North America come to this show, with the 2019 edition featuring 800 horses registered to compete and show.

The Arabian Horse Association runs four shows a year, with the other three held in the U.S. The Arabian show in Brandon is the largest breed show in Canada.

The show was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty about when the Canada–United States border would reopen, according to Allan Ehrlick, who was vice-chair of the Canadian National Show Commission at the time. Most of the competitors came from the U.S., so holding the show wouldn’t be possible without American participation.

There are several events scheduled, which have various levels of competition, including Country English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, hack, futurity fillies, geldings in-hand, stallions in-hand, showmanship, dressage, saddle seat equitation, hunter pleasure, ladies side saddle, mounted native costume and breeding mares over three years old.

Along with events in the rings, the public can come backstage to visit the stables, meet the horses and tour the facilities. The event is so important in the horse world that a horse’s performance at the competition affects breeding programs.

This is a chance for stables and breeding programs to show off their stock and compare performance standings.

Requests for comment from the Arabian Horse Association on this year’s show were not returned by press time.

The Arabian is one of the oldest domesticated light horse breeds in the world. Originally from the Arabian Peninsula, it has been bred by Bedouin tribes since 3,000 BC for speed and agility. They became a sought-after animal for breeding programs and feature a distinctive, angular head with wide nostrils and protruding eyes, as well as a high tail carriage. They are a foundation breed for many other horses, including thoroughbreds.

According to the Arabian Horse Association website, as per travel regulations and COVID-19 border measures, all competitors are being asked to stay up to date with government requirements, as well as download the ArriveCAN app for travel documentation.
