The RCMP is now investigating a suspicious death in Canupawakpa Dakota Nation as a homicide.
Mathew Brown, 36, was found dead on July 9 at approximately 9:20 a.m. in the First Nation, police say. Brown was from Canupawakpa, approximately 95 kilometres southwest of Brandon.
Officers in the Manitoba First Nations Police Service originally responded to a report of a complaint of an assault at a residence. When they arrived, they found Brown dead, according to police. His death was originally considered suspicious.
Canupawakpa Dakota Nation Chief Lola Thunderchild declined to comment when reached on Wednesday, as the death is still under investigation by police.
The RCMP’s Major Crimes Service is investigating with help from the MFNPS.
No charges had been laid in the incident on Wednesday.
Anyone with information on Brown’s death is asked to call the Manitoba First Nations Police Service at 1-833-978-0048, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com or email tips to tips@mfnp.ca.
The Sun reached out to family members on Facebook but did not hear back on Wednesday.
