Bike safety in schools
When my kids were in grade school in the ’70s, there was a bike program about safety and Cautious Kyle, I think he was called, would go to the schools and talk to them. They even had tests to see how well the students understood the rules and they were given a licence and they understood the importance of being careful on bikes. We need to go back and do this again. They made sure the bikes were safe. It just was a good program.
Invasive species
There has been a lot of information over the past several years about invasive species: zebra mussels, wild pigs and smallmouth bass, for example. Let’s consider the biggest offender when it comes to invasive species: humans. I spent a weekend camping at William Lake; the water is clean and clear as no motorized boats are allowed on the lake except for two-stroke electric motors. What a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy nature without the sound of Jet Skis and motorboats. Let’s take Clear Lake as an example. I was there a couple of weeks ago (on a weekday) and the boat trailer lineup was several blocks long along the boat cove road. With all the complaints of the price of gas, there are those who are fortunate enough to drive their big trucks pulling those big boats. I’d like to suggest this lake is getting “loved to death.” We are long overdue to start thinking about how a leisurely boat cruise on a large pontoon boat is an “invasive” intrusion to the biology of our lakes.
