Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 02/08/2022 (1301 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The City of Brandon is preparing to install new sidewalks along Van Horne Avenue from 19th Street to 22nd Street, according to a tender posted to its website.
While the streets that Van Horne intersects with along that stretch of road going north and south have sidewalks, there are not currently any sidewalks on Van Horne on those blocks.
As part of the same tender, the city is also looking for the winning contractor to replace the sidewalks on 11th Street south of the CN Rail tracks as it approaches Southern Avenue.
The final part of the tender requires accessibility improvements be made at 16 Brandon Transit bus stops.
Stops being upgraded include Knowlton Drive at the Sportsplex, Sixth Street at Van Horne Avenue near the Heritage Co-op Food Store, Maryland Avenue at Maryland Park School, 15th Street at Princess Avenue near Winnipeg House, 15th Street at Louise Avenue near Hobbs Manor, Victoria Avenue at 23rd Street and the intersection of Richmond Avenue and First Street.
According to drawings provided in tender documents, the upgrades include new landing pads, improved sidewalks and new barrier curbs and gutters.
The city requires that the winning contractor have the work completed on or before Oct. 31. Bidding for the tender closes Aug. 4 at 5 p.m.
At Brandon Municipal Airport, the city is looking for a contractor to repave a section of road near the runway and the Brandon Flight Centre.
The deadline for this work’s completion is Sept. 23, with bids closing on Aug. 11 at 2 p.m.
Another project at the airport is the installation of a new stone and concrete sign that will sit at the corner of Highway 10 and Sandison Road at the turnoff for the facility.
Earlier in the year, the city put out a tender to move wildlife fencing protecting the jet monument at the same corner.
A mockup of the sign shows the intended design as being five metres wide by three metres tall reading “YBR” on the left side and “McGill Field — Brandon Municipal Airport” on the right.
Accompanying the sign will be two 400-watt floodlights to illuminate it. The contractor will also need to build the sign sturdy enough to avoid flood damage.
The sign must be installed by Oct. 31, with bids for the tender closing on Aug. 5 at 5 p.m.
Also being sought is information on the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera.
According to another posting on the city’s website, Brandon Fire and Emergency Services’ current thermal camera — used to detect heat sources and victims — is at the end of its lifespan.
Because of that, the city wants to investigate the market and see what replacement options are available and has put out a request for information.
That request closes for submissions on Aug. 17 at 5 p.m.
