COVID-19 cases continue to creep upward as Manitoba’s death toll increased by 14 people in the second week of August.
The province’s latest weekly COVID-19 surveillance data is reporting deaths related to the virus increased from 2,079 to 2,093 between Aug. 7-13. This includes two people who died during the reporting period.
As COVID-19 cases are no longer reported directly to public health, health officials have said in previous comments delays in reporting deaths are to be expected. Once deaths are confirmed, they are added to the next weekly update.
Cases, hospitalizations and test positivity is also going up for the third week in a row, with 72 people admitted to hospital with COVID, including 19 to intensive care. In the week prior, 57 people were admitted to hospital and 12 were admitted to intensive care.
The test positivity rose to 23.8 per cent and 455 people were confirmed to be positive with COVID-19. The week prior, 347 people tested positive and the positivity rate was 20.8 per cent.
In terms of vaccines, as of Aug. 13, 83.1 per cent of Manitobans five and older have been fully vaccinated, and 55.6 per cent of residents 18 and older have received at least one booster shot.
There were nine outbreaks recorded during the reporting week. Seven of them were in long-term care homes: Winnipegosis Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre-Lodge 2 East and Lodge 2 West, Donwood Manor Personal Care Home, Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home-Unit 2 and Unit 3 and Action Marguerite-St. Boniface, Unit 4AB. Two were in hospitals: The Pas Health Complex-Acute Inpatient Ward and Concordia Hospital-N3E.
