Years of experience at Brandon University and a degree from the institution will likely come in handy for someone taking over as BU’s new recruitment and retention director.
Leanne Barcellona will be leading the university’s efforts to welcome new students and support them through graduation, according to a news release.
The timing of her new position comes as a new school year is set to begin in about two weeks’ time.

It has been a hit-the-ground-running kind of start for Barcellona, who begins her new position at a critical point in the academic year.
“This is one of our busiest seasons, as we prepare for the start of fall term, to welcome all our brand-new incoming students, plus all of our returning students, Barcellona said. “There may be some unique challenges as everyone adjusts back to in-person learning.”
She added she is thankful to be surrounded by a fantastic team. Everyone is working to be ready to support the university’s students with positive and engaging campus experiences.
Barcellona started her new position earlier this month.
She has previously served for three years as BU’s director of admissions and awards and has held several roles in the Faculty of Education and School of Music. She has a master’s degree in post-secondary studies from Memorial University and a bachelor of arts degree from BU.
“I am excited to shift into recruitment and retention and to help students find the right path to their post-secondary goals,” she said. “I am very much looking forward to welcoming students back onto campus this fall — they really inspire our work, and we have all missed their energy and enthusiasm.”
That energy and enthusiasm will be critical in helping attract students and help them stay on track during their studies, said Katie Gross, dean of students at BU.
“As a BU grad herself who has worked in areas around the campus, she brings deep wells of knowledge and a passion for BU,” said Gross.
