In less than nine weeks, residents will head to the polls to elect a new group of Brandon School Division trustees, with a nomination period that’s set to take place between Sept. 14-20.

Heather Ewasiuk, senior election official with the City of Brandon, reminded the public what it takes to be a nominee, at the board of trustees’ most recent regular meeting.

“As we know, school trustees come from all walks of life. They’re retirees, homemakers, professionals, tradespeople, university students. The list goes on,” she said Monday.

“But what do these people have in common? They have a sincere interest in children and education and the desire to serve their communities.”

Anyone interested in running must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years or older, and has lived in the division for at least six months by election day on Oct. 26.

However, certain people can’t run for a seat even if they meet these broad qualifications. This group of ineligible candidates includes BSD students, Brandon city councillors, members of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada.

In order to get one’s name on the ballot, nominees must collect at least 25 signatures from local electors.

All candidates must file nomination papers, which must be dropped off in person at Ewasiuk’s office, located on the second floor of city hall in the legislative services division.

BSD school trustee elections usually take place every four years, although Brandonites last went to the polls in November 2020 after three board members announced their resignation within a short period of time.

The byelection resulted in nominees Calistus Ekenna, Jason Gobeil and Blaine Foley joining the board, which also consists of Linda Ross, Sherilyn Bambridge, Kim Fallis, Delvina Kejick, Lisa Letain and Jim Murray.

Since the turnout for the 2020 byelection was quite low, with just over 1,700 ballots cast, Ewasiuk said the city is hoping to launch a “My Vote Matters” campaign to incentivize people to get out and vote.

The BSD board of trustees is responsible for managing the affairs of the district’s 24 schools and roughly 9,000 students.
