Two new names enter council race

The City of Brandon’s list of city council candidates for this fall’s municipal election grew by two Friday.

The list shared by senior election official Heather Ewasiuk shows that Jeff Plas has registered for Ward 1 (Assiniboine Ward) and Greg Hildebrand has registered for Ward 5 (Meadows-Waverly).

Ward 1 had no candidates as of last week but now has two after Plas’s registration and former Ward 10 candidate Kevin Chambers switched districts earlier this week.

Hildebrand’s entry makes Ward 5 a contest with incumbent Coun. Sunday Frangi running for re-election.

All wards now have candidates and only wards 4, 6, 7 and 9 have just a single candidate running in them.

Upcoming COVID-19 vaccine clinics

Prairie Mountain Health is hosting COVID-19 vaccine clinics next week for ages six months old and up for first, second, third and fourth doses if eligible.

All clinics will have walk-in and booked appointments, or walk-in only as indicated.

  • Brandon — Shoppers Mall near Smitty’s (1570 18th St.): Sept. 8 and 15 from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Erikson — Southquill Food Bank — (46 Main St.): Sept. 7 from noon to 3 p.m. Walk-in only.

Children between the ages of five to 11 can now receive a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. A minimum six-month interval between the last dose and the booster dose is recommended.

Health officials have also recommended that children who are eligible to get a booster dose but were recently infected with COVID should wait three months afterward to get a booster dose.

Those who are immunocompromised should check eligibility criteria here. Remember to bring your consent form to your appointment.

Arrest made after relationship breaks down

Police arrested a 19-year-old woman for assault after a disturbance was reported at a residence around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Officers determined that the woman had hit the adult male victim, no age given, after their relationship broke down. The victim did not require medical attention

The woman is due to appear in court on Oct. 6 on charges of assault with a weapon and assault.

Man arrested for two thefts

Police arrested a 28-year-old man for theft on Thursday and found out that he was a suspect in a theft at the same store just a few days earlier.

At approximately 11 a.m., police received a report from a business on the 100 block of Rosser Avenue that the man had stolen merchandise.

Using security footage, police identified and located the man later in the day and then discovered his connection to the earlier theft.

He was due to appear in court Friday on two charges of theft under $5,000.

Closures at hospital parking lot

Parking is about to get a little tighter at Brandon Regional Health Sciences Centre for the short-term as construction in the main parking lot and nearby metered spaces continues.

Starting Sept. 7, the north side of the public parking lot will be closed off and there will also be fewer metered parking spots along Russell Street, according to a news release from Prairie Mountain Health. The only entrance into the parking lot will be via Russell Street. The Dennis Street parking lot entrance remains closed.

Signs will be posted directing people where they can park.

Construction in the parking lot began Aug. 15. In previous statements, PMH explained this expansion is part of $812 million in budget spending in health care infrastructure announced last summer by the then-Brian Pallister Conservative Government to make the centre a hub for medical services in southwestern Manitoba. The spending is aimed at expanding and building new facilities in 38 locations across the province.

Brandon Regional Health Centre’s expansion and renovation will see approximately 30 new medicine beds, a new intensive care unit and an expansion to the existing neonatal intensive care unit.

The adjacent Western Manitoba Cancer Centre will also get a 650-square-metre expansion and a new medical linear accelerator for external beam radiation treatments.

All of these will allow people to get cancer treatments and medical care closer to home, Premier Pallister said at the time.

Construction is scheduled to conclude in 2025.
