Westman residents raised more than $11,000 for the Kidney Foundation of Canada over the weekend during the organization’s first in-person Brandon Kidney Walk since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event took place outside the Westridge Community Centre Sunday afternoon, where 50 or so participants performed a short loop around the block after a draw and a short Zumba workout.

Greg Unger, executive director of the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Manitoba branch, told the Sun that the money raised on Sunday will fund a variety of programming that’s designed to benefit those living with kidney disease.

This includes summer camp for kids with chronic kidney disease, peer support initiatives and financial assistance programs, with that final item being especially crucial now that the cost of living continues to rise.

“With kidney disease comes many unexpected, out-of-pocket costs,” Unger said in a news release. “Thanks to the generosity of the community, we can provide support for kidney patients, both financially and emotionally, so that they know they are not alone.”

It felt great to be back doing the Kidney Walk after a lengthy hiatus, Unger said, especially since Sunday marked his organization’s first full in-person event in general since the pandemic emerged back in early 2020.

“The last two years we did virtual [walks]. And they have a place and we’ll still do some events like that,” he said.

“But we’re hoping that this is the start of being able to do some in-person events, not just fundraising events, but … there’s a need for education programming. We’ve gotten used to doing things on Zoom and doing online webinars, so it would be nice to be in the same room with people again.”

Unger also mentioned that his colleagues at the Kidney Foundation of Canada Manitoba branch are using the event in Brandon as a test run for the next couple weeks, with additional Kidney Walks scheduled to take place in Winnipeg this Sunday and in Morden on Oct. 2.
