Children between the ages of five to 11 can receive a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. A minimum six-month interval between the last dose and the booster dose is recommended. Health officials have also recommended that children who are eligible to get a booster dose but were recently infected with COVID should wait three months afterward to get a booster dose.

Those who are immunocompromised please check eligibility criteria at https://www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine/eligibility-criteria.html#third. Remember to bring your consent form to your appointment.

RCMP West District sees increase in crime

August brought a year-over-year increase in crime for western Manitoba, boosted mainly by property and drug offences, according to monthly statistics provided by Mounties.

The RCMP’s Manitoba West District includes an area that covers Dauphin to the north, Killarney to the south, Portage la Prairie to the east, and Virden to the west. The west district saw a seven per cent increase in occurrences overall, the only one of the three districts in the province to see a rise when August of this year was compared to the same period last.

Specifically, “common police activities” was up overall to 771 occurrences from 646 (19 per cent), the largest being breach of the peace reports that went up to 160 from 129 (24 per cent). There was relatively no change for crimes against people. Crimes against property were up to 928 from 646 (44 per cent), including theft, burglary, and arson. Drug enforcement went up to 46 occurrences from 30 (53 per cent), with trafficking occurrences moving to 30 from nine (58 per cent).

Overall, the districts’ occurrence counts (combined) decreased by less than one per cent (from 19,424 to 19,399).

Angry interloper gets a shock

An unwelcome guest at a city home received a rude awakening when he lashed out at police who had woken him up. He was hit with a stun gun when he tried to fight officers.

Brandon police say they were called to the home around 7 p.m. Thursday to deal with a number of intoxicated individuals who were making trouble for the homeowner and refused to leave.

When they tried to stir an unwanted, passed-out guest, he immediately began to assault the officers who then used a stun gun on the man to gain compliance.

Once that man was arrested, a woman assaulted officers as they tried to take the original suspect away. She was arrested, too.

A 27-year-old man was lodged at the police station to appear in court Friday for charges of resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer.

A 66-year-old woman was released to appear in court on Dec. 1 on charges of obstructing and assaulting a peace officer.

Girl arrested for assault

A second teenage girl has been arrested in relation to an after-school assault that was recorded on video by an accomplice.

Brandon police say they have arrested a 12-year-old girl believed to be the assailant in a May 27 attack in which a 12-year-old boy was pushed to the ground and punched and kicked. She has been released to appear in court in December.

Another girl, a 13-year-old believed to have been the one to record the attack, was arrested on June 20 as a party to the assault.

Upset man gets a time out

Police lodged a man at the Brandon Police Service station when he wouldn’t calm down following an argument.

Police say they responded to a disturbance at a home on Thursday and learned that an argument had turned physical.

A 34-year-old man who was allegedly involved wouldn’t calm down, and to prevent the situation from escalating police arrested him and took him to the police station. They didn’t say whether the man was charged.

Police pick up wanted suspects

Two people accused of missing court will end up there anyway after police arrested them.

Brandon police say they arrested a 24-year-old woman on Thursday. Wanted for allegedly failing to attend court, she was held at the police station to appear in court on Friday.

In another case, police report they found a wanted 28-year-old on Thursday who allegedly failed to attend court previously. He too was held at the police station to appear in court on Friday.
