BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The Wheat Kings (14-1-0) suffered their first loss of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League on Sunday, falling 4-1 to the Winnipeg Bruins (14-3-0), who tied them for first place with 28 points.

Brandon, which scored 73 goals in its first 13 games, managed just a pair over the weekend.
On Sunday, Easton Odut tied the game in the first period but it was all Winnipeg after that as they scored three unanswered goals in the victory over the previously unbeaten Wheat Kings.
Both Bruins netminder Dimitri Fortin and Wheat Kings goalie KC Couckuyt made 32 saves.
On Friday, Ekam Dhaliwal’s power-play goal 10:41 into the first period proved to be the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over the Wheat Kings topped the seventh-place Winnipeg Wild (8-5-0).
KC Couckuyt made 23 saves for the shutout for Brandon, with Nicolas Rempel turning aside 31 shots for Winnipeg.
The Wheat Kings host the Kenora Thistles at J&G Homes Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The sixth-place Cougars (8-8-2) dropped a home-and-home series against the third-place Winnipeg Thrashers (13-4-0) and also fell to the fourth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (11-4-2).
On Sunday, the Hawks built a 4-0 lead in the first period at the Access Event Centre in Morden, but Cougars forward Nicholas Cullen scored twice and Jack Clark added a single in a five-minute span to bring Southwest back into the game at 4-3 in the second period.
Pembina Valley scored again early in the third period, and although Kelby Diehl sniped for the Cougars with 40 seconds remaining, Carter Campbell sealed the game for the Hawks with a late empty netter in a 6-4 victory.
Evan Svoboda and Micky Gross combined to make 34 stops for Southwest, while Pembina Valley’s Raiden LeGall turned aside 33 shots.
On Saturday at Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex, the Thrashers scored the final three goals en route to a 5-3 win. Jayce Thompson, Jack Clark and Bryan Laing replied for the Cougars.
Svoboda of Southwest and Austin Kindrat of Winnipeg both stopped 26 shots.
On Friday at the Gateway Recreation Centre, Logan Chartrand broke a 5-5 tie when he scored with four minutes remaining as Winnipeg emerged with a 6-5 victory.
Dawson Andries and Nicholas Cullen each had two goals for the Cougars, with a single coming from Sebastian Stone.
Gross made 30 saves for Southwest, with Braxton Burdeny blocking 31 shots for Winnipeg.
The Cougars visit the Winnipeg Wild at the BellMTS Iceplex on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The fifth-place Chiefs (9-5-3) earned two points in a busy weekend that saw the play twice against the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (7-10-1) at the Teulon-Rockwood Arena, plus a Sunday matinee against the Thrashers at Shoal Lake Communiplex.
On Sunday, the Thrashers built a 5-0 lead — Winnipeg’s Liam Urciuoli had goals 18 seconds apart — before Rory Poole responded midway through the second period. But Winnipeg added two more goals in a 7-1 victory.
Jase Wareham made 30 saves for Yellowhead, with Braxton Burdeny blocking 40 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday, Adam Vigfusson scored twice as Interlake topped Yellowhead 6-3. Bryce Bryant had two goals and Addison McIntosh added a single for the visitors.
Connor Dawson made 39 saves for Yellowhead, with Dylan Leclair turning aside 25 shots for Interlake.
On Friday, Max Collyer and Bryant each scored twice and Rylan Gage also sniped in a 5-3 Yellowhead win over the Lightning.
Wareham made 32 saves for Yellowhead, with Alex Myers blocking 36 shots for Interlake.
Bryant, a Virden product, now has 13 goals in 16 games for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs have a home-and-home series against the Parkland Rangers next weekend, playing at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday at the Russell Memorial Multiplex at 7:30 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The 11th-place Rangers (3-13-1) dropped a pair against the 10th-place Kenora Thistles (6-12-1) at the Kenora Recreation Centre.
On Sunday, Madden Murray scored twice and Luke Myhre added a single but the Rangers fell 6-3 to the Thistles. Kyler Swanton made 36 saves for Parkland, with Patrick Forsythe blocking 34 shots for Kenora.
On Saturday, Landon Lowes scored a power-play goal 4:30 into overtime as the Thistles emerged with a 5-4 victory.
Cade Legaarden scored twice, with singles coming from the sticks of Dru Mushumanski and Bo Eisner. Parkland led 4-3 with four minutes left but Carson Maffey tied the game for Kenora to send it to overtime. Chase Glover made 39 saves for Parkland, with James Sinclair blocking 23 shots for Kenora.
The Rangers have a home-and-home series with Yellowhead next weekend.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The third-place Chiefs (7-3-1) earned a pair of victories in weekend games on the road in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.
On Sunday afternoon, Chiefs forward Mia McGregor opened the scoring against the fourth-place Winnipeg Avros (7-3-0) in a game that featured an extra long first intermission when there was an issue with the ice-cleaning machine at Seven Oaks Arena
Winnipeg tied it and Kahlen Wisener gave the hosts their first lead when she scored with six minutes remaining in regulation, but Nadia Nickel tied it for Yellowhead 44 seconds later to send the game to overtime and eventually a shootout, where Dara Thompson was the hero in Yellowhead’s 3-2 victory.
Natalie Rampton earned the win in net for Yellowhead.
On Saturday, Thompson scored the winning goal in the second period, Kennedy Wood added an insurance marker and Clair Merckx posted a shutout in a 2-0 victory over the seventh-place Pembina Valley Hawks (3-9-1) at Morden’s Access Event Centre.
The Chiefs return to the ice on Sunday when they host Pembina Valley at Shoal Lake Communiplex.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The second-place Wildcats (10-2-0) won their only game of the weekend, which came against Pembina Valley at the Hartney Community Rink on Sunday.
After the Hawks took the lead with a goal late in the first period, Billie Baranyk, Hayley Kolosky and Haley Blaine replied with a three-goal barrage in five minutes during the second period to take a 3-1 lead. But it was Blaine’s second goal that stood as the winner as the Wildcats earned a 4-3 victory.
Payton Murray earned the win in net for Westman.
The Wildcats next see action when they visit the Winnipeg Avros at Seven Oaks Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m.
