Career Connections Inc. has a new executive director in Joy Escalera, who previously served as a member of Westman Immigrant Services for nearly 12 years.

Escalera officially took on this lead position with Career Connections on Thursday and said she is grateful for the opportunity to oversee the local non-profit organization, which is dedicated to finding sustainable employment for persons with disabilities.

“I am excited to be here at CCI and [am] looking forward to taking them to new heights; keeping the clients, participants and members at the forefront of our services,” Escalera wrote in an email to the Sun. “CCI will continue to be successful in the community and committed to positive outcomes.”

Escalera grew up and received her formal education in the Philippines, where she obtained a bachelor of science degree from Dominican College and later attended De La Salle University to study clinical psychology.

In December 2010, Escalera and her family moved to Brandon, where she was initially hired to work as an office assistant and intake worker at Westman Immigrant Services.

Over the next decade, Escalera would take on various roles within the organization, eventually becoming its director of operations earlier this year.

During that period, Escalera also kept busy in the community through her volunteer work and currently serves as a board member for the YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter, the Brandon Healthy Families Team and Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba.

Escalera said her past community involvement will serve her well as the next executive director of Career Connections, even if the transitional period is bound to have some speed bumps along the way.

“Having somebody new with a new style of leadership and perspective in doing things, that might be a challenge,” she said.

“But I believe that my experience at Westman Immigrant Services and my other employment back home have prepared me for this.”

Escalera is inheriting the role from Tracy Williams, who held the position for the past six years, according to a member of the non-profit’s board.

Career Connections itself has operated in Westman for half a century, providing vocational training, job site evaluation and vocational rehabilitation to those with special needs.
