The end of a year is often a point of reflection and for photojournalists it is an opportunity to look through the past year of photographs, grumble to ourselves that our work isn’t good enough and vow to work harder next year.

The end of a year is often a point of reflection and for photojournalists it is an opportunity to look through the past year of photographs, grumble to ourselves that our work isn’t good enough and vow to work harder next year.

Being a photojournalist is often a full-time exercise in self-criticism. I filed approximately 3,000 photos for The Brandon Sun throughout 2022. When I look through the past year, I see all the moments that weren’t there, the failures, the images I missed, the stories I wish I had more time to pursue and the attempts that just didn’t work out.

However, I also feel lucky for the privilege I have in documenting the community I live in. Anyone who has met me knows I love the Prairies. My selections for my photos of the year reflect this. They aren’t key events or major stories but rather strands of life from 2022 that reflect southwestern Manitoba as if it is a single, living, breathing system. So I don’t see this edit of photos as disparate moments but as one cohesive, connected story of Westman.
