NEEPAWA – Matt Dunstone earned a spot in the 2023 Viterra Championship final on Sunday morning with an 8-4 semifinal win over Carberry’s Braden Calvert.

Dunstone will now go up against Reid Carruthers at 2:30 p.m. at the Yellowhead Centre, with the winner going on to represent Manitoba at the 2023 Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont., next month.

“We’re very pleased,” said Dunstone, who curls out of the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg and is joined on his team by third B.J. Neufeld, second Colton Lott and lead E.J. Harnden.

“We took the long way this time around but we like the way that we are playing at the moment. We’re really excited to be playing Reid in the final.”

The turning point in the contest came in the sixth end as Dunstone picked up three points to break a 3-3 tie.

Calvert, who also plays out of the Fort Rouge with third Kyle Kurz, second Ian McMillan and lead Rob Gordon, gave up a steal of two in the seventh end and drew for a single point in the eighth before shaking hands with the top-ranked team in the country.

“It was just a couple of shots here or there that had us missing out on a spot in the final, so we’re disappointed in that sense, but it’s nice to play well and be in the mix at this event,” Calvert said.

This was the best result at the Viterra Championship for Calvert, who skipped his junior team to a fourth place finish in Brandon eight years ago.
