WAWANESA — Grant Jackson will represent the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba in the upcoming provincial election, where he will run in the Spruce Woods constituency to try and replace outgoing MLA Cliff Cullen.
Jackson, who was born in Souris, earned this shot during Saturday’s Spruce Woods candidacy election, which took place at the Wawanesa and District Community Hall.
After the polls closed at 3 p.m., the Manitoba government employee ended up collecting more votes than fellow candidates Ted Dzogan and Linda McRae-Walker, who are both relatively new to the world of politics.
While this is Jackson’s first attempt at running for public office, the 26-year-old is no stranger to the political sphere, having previously served as a special assistant to Cullen and as a staffer to Brandon–Souris Conservative MP Larry Maguire.
Maguire even attended Saturday’s candidacy election in Wawanesa to publicly champion Jackson’s hardworking nature and strong conservative values.
During his time on stage, Jackson reiterated his pledge to expand healthcare availability for Spruce Woods constituents and crack down on rural crime.
“I’m really excited,” Jackson told the Sun after the results came in.
“I’m humbled and honoured that the membership of this constituency, my home constituency, supported me. That’s a really humbling feeling and I’m just excited that they think I’m up to the task.”
The candidacy race to represent the PCs in Spruce Woods was triggered after Cullen announced on Dec. 29, 2022 that he would not be seeking re-election after nearly 20 years as an MLA.
Cullen has represented the provincial riding of Spruce Woods — which consists of Brandon’s North Hill as well as communities like Glenboro, Souris, Wawanesa, Rivers and Oak Lake —since 2011.
Before that, he served as the MLA for Turtle Mountain from 2004 to 2011, with that riding later being combined with the Minnedosa constituency to form Spruce Woods.
The provincial election to determine who will take Cullen’s seat must be held on or before Oct. 3.
