IIU investigating BPS
Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating allegations of a domestic assault by an off-duty Brandon Police Service officer in the city.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was notified of the incident by BPS on April 2, which was when the alleged incident took place.
There were no serious injuries as a result of the incident, but the IIU has determined it is in the public interest to investigate.
Witnesses or others with information or video footage are asked to contact the IIU.
As the investigation is ongoing, the organization will not provide further details.
Prohibited driving
A 34-year-old man was arrested after police allegedly found him driving while prohibited Tuesday afternoon.
The man was arrested for operation of a conveyance while prohibited after a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Victoria Avenue.
He will appear in court on June 5.
Breach of peace
Two men were arrested at an apartment building on the 200 block of Fifth Street on Tuesday night for allegedly disturbing residents.
The first man, 45, was arrested around 8 p.m. after police found him intoxicated and trying to fight others. He was lodged at BPS until sober.
Police then returned to the apartment building to arrest the second man, 34, who was allegedly causing problems for residents.
Police found him to be under the influence of drugs and lodged him at BPS to prevent his behaviour from continuing.
Work on sewer upgrades continues
Some south-end residents can expect detours and noise, the city warns, as work resumes on sewer upgrades near the Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
The city issued a public notice Wednesday afternoon that sewer work will be complete on the south side of the cemetery off of 18th Street, and continue along the north side of Magnolia Drive to Ninth Street.
The project will increase the size of the sewer network so it can handle greater flows created by development to the south, and accommodate further growth in the area, the city stated in a news release.
Earth Max Construction Inc. was hired to complete the work that began in 2022 but was delayed due to bad weather. Work has already resumed and is expected to be done by early June.
So wastewater can continue to flow, a bypass pumping system is required that uses large, above-ground hoses and pumps. Flows must continue 24 hours per day, and the city warns residents they can expect some noise in the area.
In addition, the walkway on Magnolia Drive will be closed between Ninth and 18th streets. Instead, pedestrians should use Aberdeen Avenue. Road closures can be expected.
