Eric Reid stopped all 22 shots he faced and the Virden Oil Capitals scored three times in the third period on its way to a 3-0 win over the Portage Terriers in Game 4 of their Manitoba Junior Hockey League semifinal series at Tundra Oil & Gas Place on Thursday night.
Virden’s win evened up the best-of-seven affair at two heading into Friday’s Game 5 at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie. The contest was in progress at press time.
Game 6 is set for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Virden. The Terriers would host a seventh and deciding contest, if needed, on Wednesday night.

David Bielik, Colten Miller and Andrew Blocker all found the back of the net for the Oil Capitals, while Bailey Monteith made 40 saves for a Terriers side that was last held off the scoreboard in a 1-0 road loss to the Steinbach Pistons on Jan. 26, 2022.
The Oil Capitals’ last playoff shutout came on March 6, 2020, when Ethan Peterson blocked 58 shots in a 1-0 double overtime win over the Winkler Flyers in the opening game of a quarterfinal matchup.
In the other semifinal series, the Pistons can advance to their second straight final on home ice tonight as they hold a 3-1 advantage over the Swan Valley Stampeders.
The Stampeders kept their playoff hopes alive with a 4-3 double overtime win on Wednesday in Swan River.
ICINGS: Oak Lake’s Hunter Wallace had a hat trick for the Brooks Bandits as they advanced to the Alberta Junior Hockey League final with a 4-2 victory over the Blackfalds Bulldogs in Game 4 of their semifinal series on Wednesday night. The Bandits, who have won the last two Centennial Cups, await the winner of the other semifinal matchup between the Spruce Grove Saints and the Bonnyville Pontiacs … The Flin Flon Bombers, which feature Cory King of Souris and Reece Richmond of Forrest on its roster and Brandon’s Cole McCaig on its bench, started its Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League final with the Battlefords North Stars on Friday. Game 2 in the series takes place tonight in North Battleford, Sask. … The Dauphin Kings have received a commitment from 18-year-old defenceman Trey Gnetz for the 2023-24 MJHL campaign. The Woodbury, Minn., product had nine points in 30 games this season for the Cretin-Durham Hall high school program.
