Bison enclosure opens this month
Visitors can once again visit the Lake Audy bison enclosure in Riding Mountain Nation Park starting later this month.
Parks Canada will reopen access to the enclosure May 18 and the campground and other day use areas in early summer.
Temporary bridge and road repairs are now complete on the eastern portion of Lake Audy Road off of Highway 10, and Parks Canada says the road is safe for visitor travel. A small section of the road will be one lane and visitors are asked to pay close attention when approaching oncoming traffic.
Visitors will also have access to the Strathclair and Central Trailhead via the bison enclosure once the road is reopened.
Work to repair the main damage to Lake Audy Road off of Provincial Road 354 is expected to begin this fall.
Perinatal mental health walk today
A local group hopes to make great strides in raising awareness about post-partum depression that can affect new mothers.
Flora’s Walk for Perinatal Mental Health takes place today at Riverbank Discovery Centre in Brandon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The walk is named after Flora Babakhani, a Canadian mother who died by suicide last year after dealing with undiagnosed, and rare, postpartum psychosis.
Half of the funds raised for Flora’s Walk will go to local non-profit societies that deliver perinatal mental health services.
Organizers say everyone is welcome, and support services will be available for those who need information about counselling.

Guns stolen from house
Police are looking for more information about a break and enter to a home on the 800 block of Second Street, where guns were stolen.
The property owner reported that his truck, camper and detached garage had been broken into between 11 p.m. April 30 and 7:30 a.m. May 1.

Book about Westman communities wins prize
Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii)’s “Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation” has won the $12,000 J.W. Dafoe Book Prize for 2023, which is awarded annually to the book the jury sees as the best at tackling subjects “involving Canada, Canadians, and the Canadian nation in international affairs.”
“Valley of the Birdtail,” published by HarperCollins, chronicles the relationship and inequalities between the Manitoba town of Rossburn and the neighbouring Waywayseecappo First Nation, following numerous generations of two families, one from each of the communities.
The prize will be awarded at an event in the fall, and the authors invited to give a talk on the project.
