Water main flushing starts today
The City of Brandon is scheduled to start its annual water main flushing program today.
Over the next month, municipal workers will start by flushing water mains from Kirkcaldy Drive to Braecrest Drive between First Street North and 18th Street North, then move on to other areas.
Work will typically take place from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., though some areas will be dealt with at other times to minimize disruptions. Those other areas will receive handouts when flushing is scheduled to take place in their neighbourhood.
Ahead of a crew arriving, signs will be set up on both ends of a street a couple of days in advance.
While their street’s mains are being cleaned, residents are requested not to flush toilets or run their water to avoid complication. It will be normal for water pressure to drop while the process is underway.
If residents see discoloured water coming out of their taps after the flushing process, they are encouraged to run their taps with cold water until it clears up.
Should a few hours pass and water remains discoloured, residents are asked to call the city’s underground utilities section during business hours at 204-729-2285.
Bank card theft suspect arrested
Brandon Police Service arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with using bank cards stolen out of cars at a Hedin Crescent home.
The garage to the home was left unlocked overnight between April 5 and 6. The two cars in the garage were rummaged through and a wallet containing credit and debit cards was stolen.
On April 6, the victim’s debit card was used at a local business. Security footage from that business helped police identify the 24-year-old man, who is currently in Brandon Correctional Centre on separate charges.
Police went to the jail Monday to advise the man of his additional charges.
Meat stolen from store
A 39-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing about $100 worth of grocery meat from the Real Canadian Superstore on April 21.
Security footage helped police identify the man, who was arrested Monday. He will appear in court on June 26 on a charge of theft under $5,000.
Brandon police told the Sun the service has noticed an increase in shoplifting incidents in the community this spring.
Theft from adult shop
Police have arrested a 34-year-old woman in connection with a theft from Smitten on May 4.
The woman allegedly stole $160 worth of merchandise from the store. She was caught on security footage, which police used to identify her.
She was located and arrested Monday and will appear in court on July 10 on a charge of theft under $5,000.
Possession of meth
A 46-year-old man was arrested after allegedly being found with a small amount of meth.
Around 8 p.m. Monday, police observed a man on a bike in the 600 block of 10th Street. According to police, officers saw a long handle sticking out of the man’s backpack, which they had believed may have been a machete.
After the man was stopped and arrested, police discovered the handle was actually a hammer. He was also found to be carrying an alcoholic beverage and a small amount of meth, despite being on court-ordered conditions to not possess any alcohol or drugs. He was charged with failing to comply with release order and possession of a controlled substance.
Police officer assaulted
A 32-year-old Binscarth man has racked up several charges after a Brandon police officer was assaulted with a metal tent pole Tuesday morning.
Around 7:18 a.m., police responded to a report from a homeowner on the 400 block of 18th Street, indicating that a man had come onto their porch and was behaving erratically.
According to police, the man was yelling and removing items from the porch. The homeowner did not know the man.
When police arrived, the man was holding a bike lock and a metal pipe wrench in a threatening manner. Police told the man to drop the items but instead, the man fled the area on a bicycle.
While an officer followed the man, other Brandon Police Service officers responded to help locate the suspect.
Police quickly found the man in the 1500 block of Victoria Avenue, but the man continued to evade police on the bicycle.
As a police officer tried to approach the man, he allegedly swung a folded metal tent pole and struck the officer. BPS would not say where the officer was struck, but that the injuries were minor. The officer was able to stop the man and arrest him.
The accused was on court-ordered conditions to not be in the city of Brandon. He was taken into police custody.
