All four Brandonites who attended the Racquetball Canada national championships last week came home with medals.
Kurtis Cullen, who coached juniors Leyton Gouldie, Kaitlyn Couckuyt and Oren Gouldie at the event that ran from Tuesday to Saturday in Winnipeg, won the bronze medal in the men’s open singles division.
Cullen beat Tanner Prentice of Saskatchewan in the third-place game after falling in the semifinals to Samuel Murray, the top-ranked male player in Canada.

He did win gold in the men’s doubles open championship with partner Coby Iwaasa of Alberta after the duo defeated Samuel and Tom Murray of Quebec in the final.
Leyton Gouldie went 2-1 in the boys singles 16-and-under division, finishing in a three-way tie for the top spot. Unfortunately for him, he fell to third on the count back, which cost him the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Juniors this fall. The other two top finishers will attend instead.
He also played in the men’s open singles competition, where the nation’s 43rd-ranked player won the consolation crown by earning four straight victories.
Couckuyt made her national debut, winning the girls singles 14U division and finishing second to her Brandon teammate Oren Gouldie in the co-ed junior A division.
Aside from winning that title in his second national championship, the 11-year-old Gouldie finished second in the boys singles 14U division, losing to 14-year-old Kyrylo Tkach of Ontario in the final. He also competed in the junior doubles event with Mason McPeek of Winnipeg, with the pair falling in the final to Kyrylo Tkach and Matthew Hudson of Ontario.
