Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett has reached out to offer his respects to the mayor of Dauphin after last week’s fatal bus collision that killed 15 and sent 10 more to hospital last Thursday.

At Monday’s Brandon City Council meeting, Fawcett spoke about the tragedy and its impact on Westman.

“I have been able to reach out by email to Dauphin Mayor (David) Bosiak, and I gave my condolences to his whole community,” Fawcett said. “It’s a small, tight-knit community.”

The mayor also said he’d spoken with Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Chief Terry Parlow and several local paramedics who attended the scene.

“We had a very, very strong team,” Fawcett said. “We had 11 staff, two different ambulances on site. It is the job that these people do, but it is a very difficult job, it was a very difficult situation. They did an exceptional amount of work.”

According to Fawcett, STARS Air Ambulance reached out to the city to acknowledge the work done by Brandon first responders in the accident’s aftermath.

After the collision, a Code Orange — a mass casualty response — was triggered by Shared Health and Prairie Mountain Health.

Fawcett commended staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre for their part in that response, taking what they had learned in theory and putting it into practice.

“I want them all to know that under the circumstance, they performed extremely well,” Fawcett said. “Our thoughts are with the families in Dauphin and of the tragedy that occurred.”

Last Friday in the House of Commons, Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Dan Mazier — who represents both Dauphin and Carberry — delivered remarks and asked for a moment of silence.

“I represent this rural region, and I know rural Canadians are strong and resilient,” Mazier said. “I know this tragic news has touched the hearts of Canadians across this country, but I also know this will leave a wound on many communities and families, a wound that may never heal.

“I thank the first responders for being there in this time of need. On behalf of all parliamentarians, I extend my sincere thoughts and prayers to the victims of this devastating accident. Canadians are here for them at this time.”
