FIFTY YEARS AGO

Beverley Clisby, 15-year-old winner of the national junior girls singles bowling championship, was awarded the Order of the Buffalo Hunt by Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans at a special ceremony in Brandon.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Canada Safeway Ltd. is discriminating against its male employees by barring them from having beards, a board of adjudication of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission ruled yesterday.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon was awarded the 1997 Canada Summer Games at a press conference today at the Royal Oak Inn. Brandon is being trumpeted as the smallest city ever to be awarded the Games. A capital budget of $6.5 million, considered lean in comparison to past Games, will have to pay for all facility improvements.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

In the city where country music dreams come true, Brandon Wheat Kings proved a huge hit on Saturday down south in Nashville, Tenn. Brandon forwards Eric Fehr, Ryan Stone and Rick Kozak were selected in the first, second and third rounds, respectively, on a banner day for the Wheat Kings’ organization at this year’s National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Happy to be back with her family and friends but sad to leave her Iraqi friends behind, Brandon activist Lisa Martens will spend the summer sharing her message of pacifism with her fellow Manitobans. Martens, 25, left Brandon in early February to go to Iraq, where war with the United States was approaching, with a delegation from the Christian Peacemaker Teams.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Koch Fertilizer plant in Brandon is the single largest polluter in Manitoba, according to Environment Canada. The fertilizer behemoth is among four plants in the Westman area called out in Environment Canada’s greenhouse gas inventory, adding to the province’s struggle to meet its soon-to-be-scrapped Kyoto target.

Calgary was swamped Friday by floodwaters that submerged much of the lower bowl of the Saddledome hockey arena, displaced tens of thousands of people and forced the evacuation of the downtown core.

After a late surge, the Brandon Wheat Kings reached this week’s early-bird season-ticket deadline virtually even with last year’s sales. At the end of business on Thursday, the Wheat Kings had sold 1,629 season tickets for the 2013-14 Western Hockey League season. That’s 19 short of the total at last year’s deadline.
