TODAY

• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout July will feature Story and Song Circle with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

• 6-9 p.m. — Cruise Night takes place in downtown Brandon on the first Thursday of the summer months, along Rosser Avenue between Sixth and 13th streets.

• 6:30 p.m. — City of Brandon Parks and Recreation Services presents live and free, The Janzen Boys at the Fusion Credit Union stage at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. with opening act Chris Ghidoni Band.

• 7 p.m. — Virden’s Music in the Park takes place every Thursday on the Jubilee Stage in Victoria Park (in case of rain, at the Legion Hall). Tonight features some country classics with Lyle Baldwin.

• 9:20 p.m. — The Shamrock Drive In (Killarney) is open for the season. Gates open at 9:20 p.m. with the movie beginning when deemed dark enough. Admission is $30 per vehicle or $10 per person ages 13 and up. Those under 12 years of age are free. Concession available. Showing tonight through July 9: “Fast X.”

FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. — Souris Peacock Days and Fair with special events all weekend such as CCDA Stock Dog Trials, antique tractor pull, MBRA barrel racing, parade, old-time dance, live music, peacock calling competition, beer gardens, food venues and much, much more. • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 10 a.m. — The community of Rivers is hosting “Rolling into Rivers” over the weekend. Today, a golf tournament kicks off at the Riverdale Golf and Country Club. To register, call 204-328-7122. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a tour of the newly upgraded and new learning centre for the Rivers Game & Fish Association, along with a barbecue. Also, at 2 p.m., the grand opening at the new gun ranges. An old-fashioned turkey shoot will start at 3 p.m., and a Class of 1966 supper will be held at Lee’s Restaurant at 5 p.m. From 4 to 7 p.m., the Rivers Police Service, the Rivers Daly Fire Department and other police service representatives will meet at the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

• 8 p.m. —With a tribute to Tina Turner, “Tina: Simply The Best” takes place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Tickets available at the WMCA box office or by calling 204-728-9510.

SATURDAY

• 7 a.m. — “Rolling into Rivers” continues with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Riverdale Community Centre followed by a parade at 9 a.m. Sekine bicycles will be on display and available for tours at 10 a.m., and draws and giveaways will take place at the Riverdale Community Centre’s parking lot. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., the Rivers Pipe Band will host its 50-year reunion at Redfern Hall in the Riverdale Community Centre, complete with music, displays, food and refreshments. From noon to 4 p.m., the classic car, tractor and bicycle show will be on display at the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot, complete with beer gardens and entertainment. At 2 p.m., the Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee will draw a winner for a Via Rail Winnipeg to Churchill and return trip and a Sekine Heritage bicycle at the Via Rail Station. A Friends of Rivers Lake supper will be held at the lake, followed by an old-fashioned hootenanny and fireworks and hotdogs at Millennium Park.

• 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Come out and visit the Farmers’ Market at the Riverbank Discovery Centre every Saturday until Sept. 23.

Let’s not forget about the deliciously homemade baked goods and preserves, and the beautifully crafted home decor. The Global Market runs every Saturday inside the Building Re-Fit Store at 23 12th St.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Chess with the Brandon Knights Chess Club takes place every Saturday at the Brandon Public Library. All skills welcome. Boards and pieces will be supplied.

• 4 p.m. — Colour Fest 2023 takes place at Dinsdale Park (321 Assiniboine Ave.) featuring music and food for purchase. Tickets: adults $10; children (5-12 years) $5 and under five are free. One complimentary colour pack is included with an adult ticket. More colour packs will be available at venue.

SUNDAY

9 a.m. — The 24th annual BACE Collector Car Appreciation Day (formerly Assiniboine Valley Run) is open to all special interest vehicles. Held at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Free registration with dash plaques given to the first 125 registrants. Free entry to spectators. Food and beverages available for purchase. Road Rebel Poker Derby registration from 9 to10 a.m. Poker derby starts at 10 a.m. Show and Shine from 1 to 4 p.m. Location and date may change due to weather conditions. • Noon to 4 p.m. — Westman Jams, a non-profit organization of musicians, is hosting their annual outdoor fundraiser at Crow’s General Store (33 17th Street E.) with live classic country music, barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. until the food runs out. Seating is available but you can bring a lawn chair or pillow for a more comfortable stay. Ice cream, coffee and tea available inside Crow’s but is cash only. New musicians welcome. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, which financially assists local students to attend the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

• 4 p.m. — Park Community Centre (1428 Louise Ave.) welcomes you to a free outdoor barbecue party with live local music by Jan Ek and The Ashbury Dyke. The barbecue will include an official presentation of two grants from Heritage Co-op to the Park Community Centre — one for a commercial kitchen, and one for a garden shed and recycling program — totalling $100,000!

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — It’s Open Knitting Night at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). Bring your yarn and needles or whatever you are working on.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

• 6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

• 7 p.m. — Lawn bowling at Stanley Park (15th Street and Princess Avenue) takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June to September. Bowls and instructions provided. Try it for free. Join us for fun and light exercise.

TUESDAY

• 6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday from June through August. This week features Just 4 Kicks. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

• 3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. All skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — School’s Out for Summer Party takes place every Friday in July with DJ Chaz! $5 cover. This is an 18-plus event and photo ID is required. Join us on Saturday for Karaoke with PJ – summer edition! The mic is yours from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. No cover, but photo ID is required.

• Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Friday features Lost in Unison from 6-7:30 p.m. Then at 9 p.m. Marazul, a group of international musicians from Canada, United States, Mexico and France, offers its own arrangements of a variety of genres. Tickets are $10.

• Sand Hills Casino (777 Sand Hill Dr. Carberry) — Join us for a weekend of some country/rock vibes with The Villains on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free.

• Houstons Country Roadhouse (3130 Victoria Ave.) — Saturday will feature a Hawaiian Luau Party! Arrive in costume and enter for a chance to win a summer prize package. Free cover until 11 p.m. Also a $500 dance competition. Drinks $4.50. Entertainment by DJ Kaotik.

• Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon) — Free music Fridays from 6:30 -8 p.m. Come check us out!

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF members who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site. For July and August: Ace Academy, a virtual reality exhibit. Come fly a Second World War biplane included in your admission.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are admitted free. • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• July 12 — The Daly House Museum Victorian Garden July Kids’ Summer Fun Program kicks off on July 12 with seed starters and garden markers. All programs run from 10-11:30 a.m. Please register by the Tuesday prior to the first program your child wishes to attend. There’s a $10 registration fee for each program. • July 14-16 — Doors Open Brandon is a weekend event offering visitors a chance to explore historically significant sites throughout the city. Self-guided tours of heritage buildings and other sites of significance will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. both days. There are four guided tour options this year. • July 15-16 — The Minnedosa Agricultural Society Fair takes place over two days with horse shows including heavy horses and miniatures. Canteen on grounds each day. Light breakfast available on Saturday and Sunday. No gate admission but donations are gratefully accepted.

• July 16 — It’s comedy night at the Roxy. Comedy Invasion is coming to the Roxy Theatre (291 Hamilton St.) in Neepawa featuring Nelson Mayer, Scott Porteous, Clayton T. Stewart and Herbert Henries. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. Tickets are one for $20 or two for $35.

• July 19-23 — The World Clydesdale Show takes place in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence at the Keystone Centre. Witness the beauty and power of these magnificent horses from around the world. Tickets will be available at the door on July 19. For more information, visit worldclydesdaleshow.com.

• July 21 — Join us at the Riverbank Discovery Centre for a make-and-take wine and cheese resin charcuterie board with local artist Amanda Dupuis at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $75 includes wine and cheese. All supplies and instructions included.

• July 21-23 — Salamander Summer Music Festival is taking place at Rideau Park. Party under the water tower with live music featuring DJs, local bands, university artists, performance troupes and more. Also on site will be a kids’ area, workshops and art installations; food trucks and beer gardens; vendor village. Weekend passes are $50 and available at salamandersummerfest.ca

• July 22-23 — Brandon’s open garden tours take place over the weekend. Come and visit some of Brandon’s hidden garden gems.

• Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
