The Park Community Centre board hosted a free family barbecue in downtown Brandon Sunday afternoon to help celebrate the $100,000 in funding they received from Heritage Co-op last month.
Heritage Co-op general manager Dennis Laing showed up in person to hand Park Community Centre president Ken Friedrich two cheques for $85,000 (Co-op Community Spaces program) and $15,000 (Heritage Co-op Community Development Fund).
Friedrich and other high-profile barbecue attendees like city councillor Kris Desjarlais (Ward 2) were ecstatic to see this significant chunk of funding come through, since the money will go towards installing a commercial kitchen and other features at a new version of the building.

“Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, we’re going to be celebrating together in a beautiful community kitchen,” Desjarlais told the crowd.
“I can’t think of something else that brings us more together than food, like we’re going to have this afternoon.”
The Park Community Centre, due to safety concerns, is scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt at its current location (1428 Louise Avenue), although an official timetable hasn’t been finalized yet.
The board is currently waiting to hear back about the status of another major grant from the province that will determine whether this rebuild project moves forward in its current form.
