Karla’s International Foods, a local Mexican store and restaurant, has moved to a more spacious and welcoming location.

The new spot, situated at 908 Rosser Ave., promises an enhanced dining experience, complete with additional features to better serve both existing and potential customers.

The founder of the business, Karla Ortega, who spoke with the Brandon Sun, revealed the motivations behind the move, what patrons can anticipate and the history of her establishment.

The new location exudes an aura of nostalgia, with the building’s previous identities as a chocolate factory and a bustling cafe leaving a distinct impression.

Ortega and her team poured their hearts into the restoration process, transforming the venue into a welcoming haven for all who walk through its doors.

“With the expanded space, Karla’s International Foods can now accommodate more guests, making it the ideal spot to relish delectable Mexican delicacies. Excitingly, we have introduced a revamped menu, featuring an exclusive Mexican breakfast on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, sure to tantalize taste buds and ignite fond memories of Mexican mornings,” Ortega said.

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the restaurant is the new seating area.

“Patrons can now savour their meals with unparalleled comfort and convenience, adding a touch of leisure to their dining experience. I am elated about the possibilities this upgrade brings, as it now allows our customers to stay and chat over coffee, fostering a welcoming and communal ambiance,” Ortega said.

Hailing from Mexico City, Ortega arrived in Brandon in February 2006.

Just a month after her arrival, “I started Karla’s International Foods within The Town Centre. Initially, it was a modest affair, consisting of only a single aisle, a cooler, and a chest freezer. Over time, we gained immense popularity, and that prompted us to relocate to the former Hallmark store, expanding our culinary haven. Later, the journey led me to Don Gardner’s Clothes store on Rosser Avenue, where I enjoyed a warm camaraderie with Don himself, reminiscing about the building’s storied past.”

Despite the numerous relocations, Ortega’s passion for serving the finest Mexican cuisine remained unwavering. Her commitment to quality and the authentic flavours of Mexico earned her a devoted customer base. Nevertheless, Ortega encountered challenges along the way, including changes in operating hours and issues with leasing agreements. Undeterred, she persisted in her quest to find a permanent home for her establishment.

Regarding future plans, Karla remains enthusiastic about her business, asserting her desire to continue serving the community for many years to come.

While explaining the challenges of doing business in a transient community, Ortega emphasized the importance of effective advertising and building strong relationships with customers. She has utilized various grants to support her business and recognizes the pivotal role they play in fostering entrepreneurship.

Ortega’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to conduct thorough market research and find a unique niche that sets their venture apart. She encourages collaboration and believes that working together with other businesses can lead to mutual growth and success.
