The victim of the Wheat City’s second homicide of the year was too young to die alone in a laneway, a witness who says he stayed with the man until first responders arrived on scene, told the Sun.
Keith Naylor, who rents a house that backs onto the 12th Street laneway where the body was found and posted on social media about the homicide, detailed the events of that night after the Sun reached him by phone on Wednesday.
“He didn’t seem very old to me,” Naylor said. “Too young to pass away alone in a back lane.”

Brandon police are still investigating the homicide, which happened Tuesday night after a man was found in the laneway between the 400 blocks of 12th and 13th streets.
Naylor said that he was outside smoking a cigarette around 11:30 p.m. before bed when he saw a man stumbling down the laneway heading north. At first Naylor said that he thought that the man was just drunk, but then he realized the man was covered in blood.
The man fell over, and Naylor, his roommate and son went to check on him. Naylor said that man wasn’t breathing, so his roommate called 911 and started chest compressions to try to revive him while Naylor’s 23-year-old son held the man’s neck.
According to police, the man had serious injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. Though police would not confirm the injuries to the Sun, Naylor said that he noticed a large gash on the man’s right arm that looked like a stab wound. He also said that there was a lot of blood coming from the man’s head.
Naylor said that the man had a cellphone and appeared to be trying to call someone but fell over multiple times.
After first responders arrived, Naylor said it was hard to sleep the rest of the night.
“It was a little bit hard to process everything that I’ve just taken on,” he said. “I’ve never had to experience anything like that before in my life.”
The Sun reached out to Brandon police to confirm the details of Naylor’s account, but did not receive a response by press time.
However, earlier on Wednesday, Sgt. Kirby Sararas told the Sun that police were still working to confirm the identity of the victim and could not release the victim’s age.
Police were also not able to confirm the cause of death or if investigators had a suspect.
