A local auto-body repair shop remains closed to the public after a parked recreational vehicle caught fire next to the building.

Brandon first responders attended Assiniboine Collision and Glass around 10:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of the fire, discovering that a Beaver Marquis RV had been totally consumed by flames.

Because of the vehicle’s close proximity to the business, the south side of the building was also set on fire, although members of Brandon Fire and Emergency Services quickly brought the situation under control.

When the Sun attended the scene around 11:30 a.m. Monday, BFES fire inspector Michael Lees and fire prevention officer Joe Szabo were on site to survey the damage.

The RV was a completely lost, with virtually nothing remaining of the motorhome except its cab and the area directly behind it.

The building’s office area was also severely damaged in the fire, with the flames eating through the walls to the point where the interior was visible.

While the rest of the building was in better shape, the roof remained bent and warped from the heat of the previous night’s fire.

Caution tape was tied around the perimeter of the building to ensure that no-one could enter the premises.

BFES deputy fire chief Marc Lefebvre told the Sun that this incident is still under investigation, and it’s too early to tell if this fire was an accident or if foul play is involved.

However, he was able to confirm that no one was hurt during Sunday’s fire.

BFES members responded to several other incidents early Monday morning, including a residential fire that took place in the 200 block of Rideau Street around 1:08 a.m.

That fire was contained to a bedroom and none of the occupants sustained any injuries.

First responders also extinguished a pair of dumpster fires located in the 200 block of Fifth Street around 1:40 a.m. that same morning.

BFES is still trying to determine the cause of these smaller Monday morning fires.
