Saturday’s homicide, in which a woman’s body was found inside a home at the Highland Park Mobile Home Estates in Brandon, has left residents there in shock.

Stephen Teetaert, 42, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 63-year-old resident Cheryl Mansoff.

The charges against Teetaert, who remains in custody, have not been proven in court and he remains innocent until proven guilty.

In a phone interview with the Sun on Tuesday evening, Mansoff’s uncle, Dave Poets, said Mansoff and her son lived at the home where Teetaert was a tenant and would help Mansoff with chores.

“He was just rooming and boarding,” Poets said. “She had one leg amputated and parts of the second leg due to diabetes. She was almost confined to a wheelchair while the guy helped her with mowing the lawn and some errands.”

Brandon police say that on Saturday they were called to a home at the mobile home park where they found Mansoff with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Poets believes Mansoff was beaten to death using various objects. Police haven’t released the cause of death, but have said it appeared Mansoff had been assaulted with multiple weapons.

Mansoff’s son, Poets said, came home from work on Friday to find the door locked, which was unusual. Mansoff’s son later went to “the lake” with his dad, Poets said.

It was Teetaert who called the next morning to report that he had found Mansoff lying on the floor, Poets said.

“It was shocking and unbelievable because I saw her last week on Tuesday,” Poets added. “The guy has been living there for over two years and she never said anything to her mother and two sisters about him because she kept pretty much to herself.”

Poets said Mansoff had become withdrawn after her marriage broke up, which was hard on her. Despite that, residents described her as a nice person.

“The incident was shocking because Mansoff was a nice woman and very friendly who does not deserve what happened to her,” neighbour Don Martin told the Sun on Wednesday.

Another neighbour, who said she was close to Mansoff and asked not to be identified, said Mansoff was always in high spirits and an avid reader. Mansoff used to work at Valleyview care home on Victoria Avenue before she retired.

Teetaert, the neighbour said, used to work at Safeway and Walmart and was always at home sitting at the back step, smoking and drinking coffee.

Other residents said Teetaert kept his head down and kept to himself.
