Brandon emergency crew attended the scene of a small fire on the south side of the brick Laplont Block building in the city’s downtown on Wednesday afternoon. When the Sun arrived on scene, fire fighters were spreading out the remains of burning rubbish on the ground, and taking down a burned wooden gate attached to the building.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Don Matthews told the Sun that the fire started in a garbage can, but firefighters extinguished the fire quickly with two fire extinguishers. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Matthews said, though a search of the garbage can did not reveal anything out of the ordinary, he added.

The building itself sustained no damage.
