Assessment ordered

An assessment for a not criminally responsible application has been ordered for Stephen Teetaert, who was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the city’s fourth homicide earlier this month.

Teetaert, 42, was charged in connection with the death of a 63-year-old Brandon resident, Cheryl Mansoff.

A family member of Mansoff told the Sun that they believe that the 63-year-old was beaten to death with various weapons.

According to the family member, Teetaert was renting a room in Mansoff’s home in Highland Park Mobile Home Estates. Mansoff used a wheelchair after her leg was previously removed due to complications from diabetes.

Teetaert’s charges remain before the court, and he is innocent until proven guilty.

His matter will next appear in court on Nov. 2.

Bike theft thwarted

A 37-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after allegedly trying to steal a student’s bike from a school on Silver Birch Drive.

According to police, the man’s attempt to take the bike was thwarted when the school principal confronted him, causing him to flee and leave behind a pair of bolt cutters.

Police located and arrested the man nearby. A check of police records revealed that the man had allegedly stolen bikes from the same school on two separate occasions.

He was charged with failing to comply with release order, attempted theft, theft under $5,000, and possession of break-in instruments.

Impaired driver

A 35-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly crashing a vehicle through a fence and into a house on the 700 block of Eighth Street.

According to police, the occupants of the vehicle fled prior to police arrival, however, officers were assisted by a witness that directed them to a nearby house.

The driver of the vehicle was identified and provided breath samples that were more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

The woman will appear in court on Sept. 28 for charges of failure to remain at the scene of an accident, impaired driving and driving over 0.08.

Winnipeg PCH staff approve strike mandate

CUPE locals representing staff at two Extendicare personal care homes in Winnipeg have voted in favour of a strike mandate, the union announced Thursday.

According to a release sent out by CUPE Manitoba, workers with CUPE 1475 and 2719 voted 99 per cent in favour of a mandate.

In that release, the union warned that locals representing the other seven Extendicare facilities across both Brandon and Winnipeg could also ask for strike mandates if the employer doesn’t offer better terms.

Extendicare operates Valleyview and Hillcrest Place in Brandon.

“Throughout the pandemic, these staff members made incredible sacrifices to keep the people who built this province safe. They put their health and safety on the line and continued to work short-staffed and at great risk out of a moral responsibility to their residents,” Local 2719 president Virginia Monton said in the release.

“Now, instead of recognizing their hard work, the employer refuses to budge from their unfair offer in an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis.”
