Elementary and high school students in Manitoba have indicated their preference for the New Democratic Party in the Student Vote Manitoba exercise that coincided with the 2023 provincial election. More than 31,000 elementary and high school students in Manitoba participated in the mock election.

“The NDP emerged as the clear winners, capturing 43.5 per cent of the popular vote and securing a majority government with 39 seats,” Student Vote Manitoba chief program officer Dan Allan stated. “Notably, Wab Kinew won his seat in Fort Rouge, reinforcing the NDP’s strong showing in the student mock election.

On the opposing side of the aisle, he stated that the Progressive Conservatives will form the official opposition with 16 seats, securing 32.4 per cent of the popular vote.

“A significant development in this exercise was the defeat of Heather Stefanson in Tuxedo, signalling a shift in the electoral landscape. The Liberal Party, with 17.4 per cent of the popular vote, secured one seat. Dougald Lamont, however, faced defeat in St. Boniface, reflecting the dynamics of this student-led election,” he added.

Despite garnering 3.9 per cent of the popular vote, Allan stated that the Green Party did not manage to secure any seats, while Janine Gibson faced a setback in Wolseley. “Similarly, the Keystone Party, with 1.4 per cent of the popular vote, did not clinch a seat, resulting in Kevin Friesen’s loss in Turtle Mountain.”

Prior to casting their ballots, he stated that the young Manitobans engaged in a comprehensive learning experience, delving into the intricacies of government and democracy.

“They researched the parties and their platforms, engaged in spirited debates about the future of the province, and ultimately exercised their democratic right by voting for official candidates running in their respective school’s electoral division.”

According to Allan, a total of 31,040 votes were reported from 281 schools, encompassing results from 56 of the 57 electoral divisions across the province.
