A candidate running for trustee in the Brandon School Division’s byelection says if elected, he will donate two paycheques to local school libraries.
Kirk Carr is one of eight people gunning for a seat in the division’s city ward (Ward 1), which was left vacant in May following the resignation of trustee Jason Gobeil.
Carr said he became interested in running after former trustee Lorraine Hackenschmidt made a presentation to the school board on May 8.

She called for the creation of a committee to review such books and potentially remove them from school shelves if they were deemed harmful to children.
Two weeks later, on May 24, the request to review and ban books with LGBTQ+ content from school shelves was rejected during a marathon school board meeting that lasted more than six hours.
The meeting was held in Vincent Massey High School’s gymnasium because more than 25 people had requested time for presentations.
Additional time was also needed for trustees to read a summary from the 289 emails and letters sent to the Brandon School Division board, which were mostly opposed to Hackenschmidt’s proposal to set up a book review committee.
With the byelection just two weeks away, Carr said if he is elected, he will lobby the government for increased education funding and donate his first two trustee paycheques to support school libraries, “which have been under attack along with 2SLGBTQ+ students by a small yet vocal group,” he says.
“They have done so by attempting to ban books with 2STLGBQ+ content from our libraries and fostering an atmosphere of distrust between educators and parents. In light of these antics, it has become increasingly evident that our school systems, teachers and students require unwavering support,” Carr stated in an email to the Sun.
The other candidates running for Ward 1 are Breanne Bauche, Quentin Derhak, Scott MacMillan, Sheri Miller, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, Kara Morrice and Brad Rusnak.
The remaining two candidates who are vying for a seat in the rural ward (Ward 2) are Lorraine McConnell and Henry Sieklicki. That vacancy was left by Caroline Cramer, who also resigned from the board in May.
The byelection will be held Oct. 25.
