Blood & Iron Tattoo’s owner Scott Oldenburger has made the difficult decision to close his shop as of Oct. 31.
He told the Sun that the closure of his business, located at 1502 Rosser Ave., was based on several factors, including his desire to own a building of his own.
“I have been looking for a commercial building to buy for a while now, to move the shop into,” said Oldenburger. “I have been renting for 12 years and would like to own a property rather than continue renting.”
He said that the search for a suitable and affordable property has been complicated by various restrictions, including those related to parking, wheelchair accessibility, zoning requirements and health department regulations. He added that his current lease was up and that he was hesitant to commit to another long-term lease.
Oldenburger also said that he plans to rebrand the business when it reopens, as the “Blood & Iron” name no longer aligns with his vision.
While he is shutting his doors, Oldenburger wanted to assure clients that there would be no interruption in services.
“Appointments scheduled for Nov, 1 and beyond will be honoured at new locations for both him and his colleague Savannah at Ward’s Tattoo Shop and Laughing Crow Tattoo respectively,” he said. “Ward’s Tattoo Shop is a larger and bustling establishment and offers the services of multiple artists and piercing services. Laughing Crow Tattoo provides a more intimate experience, operating as a private studio.”
Oldenburger said that he doesn’t have a timeline for when his renamed business might open again.
“If you bought a building, you’re looking at probably three months to close the deal and then do renovations. That’s like a six-month timeline, maybe then. I don’t even have an honest answer that could give for that. It might be a year from now.”
Until that day comes, Oldenburger offered his appreciation to Blood & Iron’s clients.
“We would like to thank all our loyal customers for their support over the last 12 years and look forward to seeing them in the future.”
