A crowd of some 300 people witnessed the official opening of the new $775,000 Daly 18th Street overpass today and watched Mayor S.A. Magnacca clip the ribbon. across the three-lane structure.

The Brandon Industrial commission played host to a distinguished visitor yesterday, A.M. Fazili, 36, deputy director of industries for West Pakistan.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The biggest tank battles in modern times were reported continuing in the Sinai desert today and Israeli-Syrian forces probed defences in a bitter tank and artillery duel on the northern front of the Middle East.

Brandon is to have a new elementary school to replace Park and Alexandra schools in the core area of the city.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Baltimore Orioles are baseball’s World Series champions today after a 5-0 wrap-up victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

CN employees were working today to restore rail service on a line between Douglas and Portage la Prairie after fire destroyed a wooden bridge about 16 kilometres northwest of MacGregor on the weekend.

A group of about 300 were all that showed up for an entertaining display of classical and jazz routines performed by the John Curry Skating Company in a program entitled “Symphony on Ice” at the Keystone Centre.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

All 245 students at Wawanesa School from kindergarten to Grade 12 were issued a challenge to fill the principal’s office with enough food to drive him from his office. As it appears that challenge has been met. The food collection was for World Food Day on Oct. 16. Rev. Jim Wilcox of Samaritan House in Brandon was the recipient of the food and principal Rex Virtue was pleased to vacate his office.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

After three years of watching the skies for just one jet, Jeff Cristall says he’s willing to look at other companies in his and the city’s search for regular jet airline service to Brandon. The net may be reluctantly cast further to get air service as WestJet, a Calgary-based discount airline, has concentrated on markets in eastern Canada instead of expanding its service to smaller cities in the west such as Brandon.

A self-proclaimed “farm girl” who spent the last 15 years working in Winnipeg has returned to her roots and become the first female general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. Karen Oliver was officially inducted into the position yesterday afternoon at the Keystone Centre. Oliver replaces Dave Wowchuk, who left in the summer after nine years to join Scaleco.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba is looking for someone to take over the reins of the organization. After 10 years as the face of the Provincial Ex, CEO Karen Oliver will be stepping down this coming spring.

Rapid enrolment growth will continue to be a challenge for the Brandon School Division leading into preliminary budget preparations for 2014-15. BSD enrolment has climbed to 8,338 students compared to 8,232 last year and 7,923 in 2011 and is expected to continue growing.
