Brandon firefighters had to rescue two turtles from a house fire in the 100 block of Rideau Street in the early hours of Monday morning.

The family had already evacuated the house when the firefighters arrived on the scene around 1:30 a.m., Capt. Doug Wheatland with Brandon Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) told the Sun.

“Our guys went in and got the pets out,” he said, adding it’s not the first time that unique pets have been rescued by the BFES. “We’ve saved tarantulas at one time.”

The fire started in the kitchen area, but the exact cause was not immediately known.

Fire crews were busy fighting the fire in the kitchen area from the outside of the house, and then, when it was subdued, entered the home to put out more of the fire from the inside, Wheatland said.

“It was probably until quarter to three in the morning that they were finishing off the overhaul and doing the hotspots,” he added. “There was also concern about the fire going into the attic and the basement by extension of the fire.”

The house is still standing, though it shows obvious signs of smoke damage throughout the dwelling.

The blaze comes just after Fire Prevention Week, which runs annually in Canada and the United States and took place from Oct. 8 to 14 this year. Around 3 a.m. last Friday, BFES responded to a fire at Progressive Westman, a sanitation supplies, equipment, and uniform rental company on Park Avenue East.
