BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The first-place Wheat Kings (12-0-0) continued their hot start, sweeping the Winnipeg Bruins (6-4-2) at Brandon’s J&G Homes Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.
On Sunday, Brandon took a 4-0 lead for the second game in a row, and Winnipeg picked that point to score two goals for the second game in a row. But Brandon’s attack was just too much, with Easton Odut sniping twice and singles coming from Jaxson Brick, Brady Turko, Colten Worthington, Jonah Lemoine and Jaxon Jacobson scoring in a 7-3 victory.
Since returning from injury four games, Jacobson, a prospect of the Western Hockey League’s Wheat Kings has seven goals and four assists at age 14 in the U18 league.
Matthew Michta made 20 saves for Brandon, with Leyton Medwick blocking 35 shots for Winnipeg, which is tied for fifth place with the Winnipeg Wild and Eastman Selects with 14 points.
On Saturday, Jacobson had a hat trick in a 15-minute span as the Wheat Kings earned a 5-3 victory. Worthington and Turko also sniped for the hosts.
Burke Hood made 33 saves for Brandon, with Justin Perreault turning aside 49 shots for Winnipeg.
In a pair of meetings between two of the top teams in the league, the Wheat Kings and the Southwest Cougars square off in a home-and-home series on the weekend, at Brandon’s J&G Homes Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, it proved to be another one of those days for Southwest, who surrendered a goal by Lincoln Black-Greaves just 23 seconds into the game and fell 5-2 to the Thrashers. Tyson Draper and Kelby Diehl had the goals for the Cougars.
Micky Gross made 38 saves for Southwest, with Taye Timmerman stopping 32 shots for Winnipeg
